1 LT Matthew R. Stovall always wanted to be a soldier. He joined the Mississippi National Guard before he graduated Neshoba Central High School in 1997. He served in numerous capacities during his enlisted years and completed Officer Candidate School in 2001. Stovall then completed his Officer Basic Course in Fort Eustis, VA in 2002.

In the spring of 2002, Matt married his college sweetheart, Natalie, soon after welcoming their baby boy, Walker. In September of 2003, Matt left his family to serve with the 367th Maintenance Company in Mosul, Iraq. While in Iraq, Stovall was chosen to lead the 1st Platoon of the 401st Transportation Company, affectionately known as “The A Team”.
On August 22, 2004, just 2 months before Matt was due to return home and on Natalie’s 22nd birthday, she received the call that Matt had been fatally wounded while serving in Iraq. His family, friends and platoon were devastated. Matt Stovall was a deeply loved son, brother, husband, father and friend. His big goofy grin and infectious laugh could win anyone’s heart. No one was a stranger to Matt for very long.
STOVALL’S SACRIFICE FOR SOLDIERS was founded to carry on Matt’s legacy. Steps for Stovall 5K Run/Walk was organized to honor and remember Matt and all American soldiers who have volunteered to defend and protect our freedom. We appreciate your participation and support in this event.
